4 new Bee Worlds from Phoenix Amenity Wildflower Seeds – Wins an Award

It is great to hear a sucess story about a community coming together and working together to improve life for everyone –  including wildlife. This usually occurs when enough people in the  community have a will to make something good happen. In this case it is – Bron Afon – who we can congratulate. They are a social enterprise established for Torfaen Council tenants and they worked a special kind of magic to create four Bee Worlds, as part of the Queen’s  Jubilee celebrations. Sixty Bee Worlds in total have been created throughout the UK to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation Jubilee, as a part of Friends of the Earth ‘Bee Cause’ campaign. Bron Afon have created the new Bee Worlds; the fourth of which is pictured being unveiled below; to encourage wildlife and especially pollinators. They are also running a competition to get local people creating their own wildlife rich habitats at home.

Friends of the Earth have awarded Bron Afon an award – (pictured):

Bron Afon’s assistant facilities co-ordinator, Steve Caddy, has written about how we have stopped cutting grass in favour of growing wild flower meadows in some of our communities.

Friends of the Earth spokesperson, Bleddyn Lake, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Bron Afon Community Housing are taking a lead on creating new bee friendly areas in Torfaen.

“We hope that other social landlords across Wales follow and help us to reverse the decline in bee species.

Phoenix Amenity Supplies have supplied Bron Afon with Hedgerow and Shade Mix and Hardy Annual Wildflower Mix as part of the sowing initiative. Chris Baker, MD, went along earlier this year on a site visit to help the scheme and to advise on which wild plants would thrive in the designated areas. Chris says:

” I was happy to give my time to take a look at the proposed wildflower areas and to advise on the best seed mixes. All of our wildflower seed mixtures have been created by an ecologist, this is to ensure that they are more easily-established and sucessful in particular conditions and soil types.”
