Wild Thyme ( Thymus polytrichus) is a member of the Mint family and is typically found in dry grassland, heaths and dunes, but occasionally it is also found growing in dry stone walls.
Wild Thyme has square stems that are only hairy on two sides. It has oval shaped leaves and in suitable conditions it spreads rapidly via its root runners. The purple flower that is produced typically grows to 5mm in diameter, and producesrounded individual flower heads. Although this plant produces a flower it is not as strongly scented as its relative, Large Thyme / Lemon Thyme.

Flowering Time: June to September
Preferred Conditions: Prefers dry and acidic, calcareous soil. It will prefer more base rich, chalk / limestone soil and will often be found on grassland and rock faces.
