Where mulches or weed mats are not used, herbicides offer a cost effective alternative for controlling weeds. The Forest Enterprise (Forestry Commission) advice and trials show that keeping the base of plantings clean during the first three years dramatically improves survival, establishment and growth. Grass weeds are the most damaging in robbing moisture and nutrients and should be given special attention.

A non-systemic contact plus residual action herbicide which controls a wide range of problem annual weeds including black bindweed, groundsel, cleavers knotgrass, speedwell, mayweeds, shepherds purse, fat-hen, redshank and annual meadow grass. Finale is a non-selective herbicide. It controls grasses and broad-leaved weeds. Use for weed control around non-edible ornamental crops including trees and shrubs and in tree nurseries. May be used to ‘burn-off’ weeds in shrub beds prior to treatment with residual herbicide. Use for preparing sports-turf for line marking.

SELECTIVE WEEDKILLERS

A wide spectrum of selective herbicide with a low application rate. Effective on all common turf weeds with the exception of speedwell.

Spearhead is a herbicide from BAYER incorporating chemistry new to the amenity industry. It gives broad spectrum weed control yet is safe to apply on newly sown grass from six weeks after germination. (For most other herbicides this is three to six months.) Five lts treats 10,000 m.

Tricle is a scrub, brush and woody weed control chemical that does not harm established grass cover. Tricle can also be used as a cut-stump treatment to prevent re-growth of trees following felling or pruning. It is important for conservation to leave a grass habitat for wildlife and also to prevent erosion, Tricle does not harm the grass and can therefore be used with confidence in these situations.

A foliar acting herbicide for the control of perennial broad-leaved weeds including NETTLES, DOCKS, THISTLES, BRAMBLES, BROOM and GORSE in established grassland and amenity grassland.

Overall Application

The timing of the application of BLASTER herbicide is crucial. For good results the product must be applied to actively growing weeds.

Spot Treatments

On grasslands where weed populations are too low to justify overall spraying, all the above weeds will be controlled by a spot treatment of 60 mls BLASTER in 10 lts of water. The weeds should be thoroughly wetted with the spray solution but not to run off as this will decrease the activity.
