Perennial Ryegrass – Lolium perenne:
- Description: A tuft former meadow grass which is hairless. The undersides of the leaves are very shiny. The stem bases are usually res just like the leaf sheaths and the nodes. It is a widespread grass with many varieties. Flowers from May to September although the main flowering period is June
- Suitability: It germinates very soon after sowing and the development is very rapid this makes for it very reliable and a very valuable forage grass. Highly recommended for lawns and recreational areas. Tolerant to salt but less tolerant to heat – good for a maritime climate, it likes nitrogen and so is very competitive
- Height: 30-60cm
- Uses: High wear sports pitches and grassland improvement
Italian Ryegrass – Lollium Multiflorem:
- Description: A biennial temporary pasture grass, hairless with rather broad leaves. The underside of the leaves is shiny. Its’ distinguishing characteristics are the spikelets which have awns and the narrow side is against the spike axis. Nor to be mistaken for perennial ryegrass – the young shoots are rolled and not folded – and couch grass. It also looks a lot like meadow fescue. Flowers June to August
- Suitability: It is tolerant to salt and semi-hardy dependent on when it is sown, it is susceptible to frost in the first year of sowing. It requires a fertile, moisture retaining soil
- Height: up to 100cm
